This 5,026-square-foot custom home is situated in the Butterfly Cottages neighborhood in the Kiawah River community, an agrihood located near historic Charleston, S.C. Kiawah River features 20 miles of shoreline, an extensive trail network and multiple working farms, including a goat dairy, heirloom beef cattle and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that delivers fresh local food to residents.
This home was designed to blend into the neighborhood, while also standing apart from the rest of the community, and maximizes the views of the marsh and the Kiawah River by prioritizing outdoor living. The owner’s suite is detached from the main house and specifically sited for views and privacy.
Additional features include a sunroom that catches the morning light from all sides, an outdoor dining porch and a grand front staircase reflective of traditional Charleston architecture. The main challenge that presented itself was weaving a home around the mature oak trees, elevating the house of the flood plain and tucking the roof lines under the tree canopy.
