Arizona Home’s Views Help Nab ‘Room of the Year’ Honors in National Design Competition

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 23 – “In Plane Sight,” 7,000 square feet of transparent planar architecture in Paradise Valley, Ariz., features an impressive outdoor room and terrace, earning it the Room of the Year title in the 2019 Best in American Living™ Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The Room of the Year award was sponsored by Monogram Appliances.

Architect/designer Drewett Works was able to encapsulate—by a horizontal bridge-like architectural form—180-degree views of Paradise Valley, Camelback Mountain, the city of Phoenix and its surrounding mountain ranges.

A glass entry door provides a glimpse of the private bridge connecting the master suite to outdoor living, highlights the vista beyond and creates a sense of hovering above a descending landscape, turning the 45-foot elevation change on the lot into a captivating advantage. Indoor living spaces enveloped by pocketing glass doors open to the outdoor, three-level paradise.

Builder BedBrock Developers and interior designer Est Est Inc. worked with landscape architect/designer Sunset Landscaping and Designs. The raised peninsula pool, which seemingly levitates above the ground floor plane, becomes the centerpiece for the outdoors and the connection between the lower-level entertainment space of the home theater and bar and upper outdoor spaces that hold the living area and kitchen.

“The outdoor bridge from the master suite is gorgeous, and the pool is incredible. Outdoor living at its best,” said Don Ruthroff, Principal at Dahlin Group Architecture Planning, NAHB’s 2019 Judging Chair and 2019 Best in American Living Awards Subcommittee Chair. “The BALA program celebrates the designers and builders who go the extra mile to bring out the best in a structure.”
