The client has been in a wheelchair for many years. He and his wife live in a beautiful single-story home near the beach and have no interest in moving. The primary shower and bathroom were small and getting into the shower and onto the toilet were becoming nearly impossible.
The design team removed walls to create more open space and widened doorways to give better access. A roll-in shower was added with many features for accessibility: no-threshold entry, multiple grab bars, handheld shower head within easy reach, niches for access to shower products, and more. The toilet was elevated for easier transferring from a wheelchair. A bidet was added to help facilitate personal hygiene. Custom cabinetry was designed specifically to the client and his needs. The team also built and installed custom mahogany barn doors that are automated for entry into the bedroom and the closet. They operate by the swipe of the hand or the push of a button on the remote.
