Salt Lake City, Utah

This all-electric, modular tiny home village prototype was a grand award winner in the Salt Lake’s Empowered Living Design competition, held to help the city achieve its goal to build a master-planned tiny home community for the homeless. This prototype is now part of its “library of designs” to expedite the building and permitting processes.

Designed to function as a small cluster on one lot or a small, planned development comprising multiple lots, the inward-looking site plan creates a village with space for a shared garden, outdoor gathering space, and barbecue/fire pit to create a sense of place that encourages community. It respects the overall feel and rhythm of a single-family detached neighborhood.

Responding to the traditional architecture in Utah while paving the way for the future, the modern cottage architectural style features warm wood tones, clean lines and dark windows to contrast with the siding materials. The steep roof pitches of the style allow for vaulted ceilings that make these homes feel larger than their square footage while creating attic space above the bathrooms (and above entry in the Lily plan) for additional storage. Floor plan configurations utilize space maximizing solutions such as murphy and loft bed.

From the Judges
This project is reflective of an effort to provide affordable housing solutions and a process to create change. It’s clearly looking to fill a gap in housing with a prototype for housing affordability solution that can be scaled up or down.
