Accessible Kitchen

A dark, small, and aging kitchen with a sunken dining room and useless atrium was no longer a suitable space for a client with multiple sclerosis and his wife. The team opened the space by removing a wall, raised the floor of the dining room, bumped out the front of the house, and added bow windows. The atrium was removed and the roof line extended. The laundry room was relocated behind double doors.

A central island was created with 48 inches of space all around for easy movement. An accessible work area was created by lowering a section of the counter and pairing a drawer microwave and dish drawer. Skylights with motorized shades, LED recessed lights, and a large task light over the island provide plenty of light. LED alternating colored lights under the counters and in display areas change the mood and ambience. Lutron motorized shades operate from an iPad and a wall station. Pull-out drawers, a touchless faucet, a foot pedal-controlled garbage disposal, extended-opening pantry doors with pull-out shelves for easy access, and a calm color scheme are just some of the many elements that turned this into an uplifting and functional kitchen.
