Naturally Luxe Kitchen Remodel

Infused with a rustic and natural flair, this extensive kitchen renovation has resulted in a cohesive design with functional work space, floor-to ceiling storage, and rich wood tones shown around every corner. In addition to incorporating the client’s love for rustic and natural elements, there was also the need to adjust the layout to accommodate additional seating and realign the existing architectural details to ensure symmetry with the adjacent living room.

The kitchen initially embodied a mix of both Spanish and old world elements such as intricate woodwork, Palladian windows, and bright tilework. This unusual interplay between styles made the kitchen feel unorganized, tight, and disconnected from the rest of the home. With a bit of diligent design, including centering a two-sided fireplace between the kitchen and living room and adding ceiling treatments overhead, the new design distinguishes the various other living spaces and ensures a cohesive flow.

The most notable design component is the exceptional use of reclaimed wood throughout nearly every application. Sourced from not only one, but two different Indiana barns, this hand hewn and rough sawn wood is used in a variety of applications including custom cabinetry with a white glaze finish, dark stained window casing, butcher block island top and handsome woodwork on the fireplace mantel, range hood, and ceiling. Underfoot, Oak wood flooring is salvaged from a tobacco barn, giving it its unique tone and rich shine that comes only from the unique process of drying and curing tobacco. To keep the design from being too monotonous, concrete countertops are selected to outline the perimeter cabinetry, while wire mesh cabinet frontage, aged bronze hardware, primitive light fixtures and playful bar stools liven the space and add a touch of elegance.

Overall, the final design presents a dynamic relationship between rustic and restrained. The result is a simple and honest space with many embellishments. The spacious, yet cozy kitchen now features many impressive design details that keep the look warm and welcoming.
