Remodel of the Week: Brown

The clients were not happy with the separation between their kitchen and family room. This new design eliminated one side window and enlarged the west wall of the kitchen to allow a featured wall with a full granite backsplash, a large-scale gas stove and a custom-made wood hood above it. The north wall was home to a commercial-sized refrigerator and freezer, built-in coffee maker and microwave, and lots of pantry and storage space.

A large island features a farm sink, dishwasher, and ample room for seating and big gatherings. The bearing wall was taken out; two steel beams were installed to carry the second-floor load and eliminate support posts. A new wood floor was incorporated into the old floor and the entire space was refinished to a new stain color complementing the new island cabinet finishes. The closet in the family room was converted to have a wet bar area with beverage center and display glass cabinets under a custom-designed backsplash tile.
