5 Tips for New Designers

Just beginning in the design industry? Here are 5 tips that can get you off to a great start.

1- Pay attention to color. Picking colors is one of the most important parts of designing a space. Color adds character, creates moods, and can bring a space to life. When choosing color(s), it is important to carefully select hues that complement each other as well as the space. Using the golden ratio is a good way to choose complementary colors. The golden ratio suggests using three main colors in any space. The first color is the dominant color. This should be about 60% of the color in the room. Next is the secondary color, which should take up 30% of the design. The remaining 10% is for a bold accent. Using the golden ratio can make your space feel harmonious and complete.

2- Prioritize space planning. Arranging furniture to maintain functionality is a key component of interior design. Overcrowding should be avoided, as having too much furniture or too many decorations or decorative pieces can hinder the usefulness of the space and make a space look cluttered. Two popular ways to efficiently plan space is by creating focal points or grouping elements, such as furniture or wall art. Designers commonly use the rule of three, which is the idea that to create a cohesive design, everything looks better in groups of three.

3- Zero in on light and lighting. Making light, especially natural light, the center of attention is a good way to enhance a space. Lighting fixtures can also be used to make a statement, focus attention on specific features, or add character. Light paint or textile colors, glass, or any element that has reflective or mirroring features can also manipulate light to make rooms come alive.

4- Give it your own spin. When designing, be sure to add your personal style. If working for clients, pay close attention to their visions for the space(s) so their style choices can be highlighted. While following trends and copying others’ designs might lead to a good start on a base design, providing a few elements that add a personal touch can make it feel more like home.

5- Emphasize quality over quantity. When making furniture or material selections, quality is always more important than quantity. Lasting designs rely on durable and resilient fittings and fixtures. A few well-made and well placed items often make more of a statement than a roomful of mismatched pieces. Good quality items will look nicer, be more comfortable, and last longer.

Following these 5 tips can help ensure your designs are appropriate and pleasing. Here’s to making many more beautiful spaces!
