Midtown is a 184-acre urban infill neighborhood on a former brownfield site, located within 5 miles from downtown Denver. The Client requested that the project reference the industrial legacy of the former brownfield site and portray a “gritty” character. The Shed serves as an iconic landmark on Pecos Street to welcome people to this new and hip neighborhood. It is the main gathering spot for residents and part of an urban street scene for the community.
Utilizing steel, precast concrete, and brick as its primary building materials, it inspires the industrial heritage of the site and bright colors on the stucco and steel provide a fresh twist. The repetitive storefront bays on the street side transition to roll up garage doors which open to the Community Garden. The Garden provides a delightful space for community events such as farm to table dining, concerts and parties, in addition to being a small working farm. A small pavilion which incorporates a water wall and festoon lighting is the centerpiece of The Garden. The concentric circular pattern of The Garden and the subtle paving textures continues through The Shed, reinforcing the indoor/outdoor experience. And, an indoor/outdoor see-through fireplace provides a focal point for casual seating areas inside and outside. In a subtle reference to The Garden, green roofs are incorporated on the structures.
The Shed interior incorporates rolling barn doors of reclaimed wood, contemporized industrial lighting, a mix of retro chairs, tables on industrial casters, and simple benches.
