Design Statement | Boasting true mid-century modern architecture, this 1967 home was purchased by a well-traveled family that loves globally inspired style and clean lines. Their goal was to keep the feel of the home but add an international flair not commonly seen in Michigan.
The main living space was generous but needed to be opened so that the kitchen was not hidden behind a wall in the dining area. The wall was removed and skylights were added to complement the existing windows above the cabinetry. Frameless, flat-panel cabinets in a white matte finish were installed around the perimeter to further the airy feel of the space.
The walnut kitchen island, coffee bar cabinets, and floating shelves added a natural element in keeping with iconic mid-century modern style. The full slab backsplash, waterfall island countertop, and paneled refrigerator contributed to the clean lines of the large space
Judges’ Comments | This is the definition of well-articulated mid-century modern design. The team created beautiful relationships in the space, especially between the kitchen and bar. What an amazing upgrade!

Design Statement | The primary objective of this project was to relocate the kitchen, which was in a back corner of the home with very few windows. It was moved to the existing dining room space because of its proximity to the new dining room, access to the patio, and stunning views. This allowed for expansion of the original kitchen and creation of a neighboring hearth room, as well as a much-needed catering kitchen.
Base cabinets in this space were finished in claro walnut, while the island was done in a warm white, both topped with a porcelain, marble-look countertop. To maintain the location of the windows, traditional upper cabinets were eliminated. The claro walnut was carried up the wall to enhance the high ceilings and was wrapped around into the hearth room to unify the two spaces. The juxtaposition of a bright white color palette with mixed textural and smooth elements created the perfect balance of mountain contemporary design.
Judges’ Comments | Judges said this impressive renovation was glamorous and transformed the whole layout of the house. They praised the “gorgeous ceiling.”
