The Mill, originally built in 1847, was Alexandria’s first cotton factory and has served many different uses over the past 170 years, including a Union Army facility, a spark plug factory, and a bottling plant. CAS Riegler purchased the building in 2013, at which point it was being used as an office, and completed a redesign and top-to-bottom renovation to transform it into 25 luxury apartments. The interior was stripped down to its original elements, revealing impressive structural members and exposed brick. Additional dormers were also added to the building’s east façade and attic space was creatively converted into habitable space to achieve stunning two-story loft units on the top floor.
The building’s historic, industrial aesthetic, which was tediously restored, is complemented by clean, contemporary finishes that include wide-plank hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, and white cabinetry throughout. A club room on the top floor opens onto a shared terrace that provides residents and guests with stunning views of Washington, D.C., Old Town Alexandria, and the Potomac River. The building’s exterior was also repointed and repainted and new windows and a new copper roof were installed to restore the building’s impressive streetfront presence along Alexandria’s main avenue, Washington Street.
